2018 Reader’s Favorite Four-Star Book Review

Reader’s Favorite Book Review, 02/04/2018 by Jane Finch. The way the author, Raymond Cook, has approached this book is slightly different to the norm. It is packed with a wealth of information which makes the reader imagine they are on the journey, even down to the wagon master’s rules and advice. It paints a very clear picture of the trials and hardships the early settlers faced, and their determination and courage as they sought a better life for their families.
This is not just the story of one family’s journey, but also recounts how everyone looked out for each other, and the importance of taking advice and following instructions. This is a story of the pioneering spirit, but also of deep loss and tragedy, told more as a travelogue rather than as a regular Western. It certainly has been well-researched by the author, who has crafted an unusual yet compelling read.

About This eBook
Has God Forsaken Me? ©2017 by Raymond Cook is a wonderful 284-page inspirational story about tragedy, loss, faith, hardships and new beginnings. Noah and Annabelle Harris and their six children live in Independence, Illinois in 1898. Like thousands of other families struggling to survive hot and humid summers, cruel winters and drought spells, they wanted a better life. The promise of 160 acres of free land from the government out west compelled the couple and their children to join a wagon train destined for Denver, Colorado.
Some families who made the same perilous journey along the Santa Fe Trail were well to do or businessmen. But many families like the Harris’s were dirt poor and would face dangers unimagined as they cross the Kansas plains. Many families drowned while crossing rivers but others died from diseases too. Noah’s family got small pox and three of their children died. They were buried along the trail without grave markers.
When the wagon train arrived at Lamar, Colorado the town held a rodeo. While everyone was there, thieves went through their wagons and stole everyone’s money. All Noah had money wise now was the money in his wallet. When they arrived at La Junta they were desperate. The next town was called Rocky Ford and they could go no further. At the edge of the town they saw a large camp.
Over a hundred families were living in canvas tents. The monthly rent was $10 and Noah and his family moved there. After selling their covered wagon and horses Noah walked into a bank being robbed. The four masked men killed everyone in the bank. Now Machelle’s a widow with two children and a baby. What does the future hold for her and has God really forsaken her?

-Amazon Reader’s Comment-
Amazon Kindle Comment on July 20, 2017… Wow! What a wonderful story. I feel the author’s choice to depict Florence Thompson as the mother in “has God Forsaken Me?” was perfect. Journeying across the Kansas plains in the 1890’s was a brutal journey. The author’s story kept me turning the pages and wiping my eyes following Noah, Machelle and her children from Missouri to Colorado.

I was born in Shelton, Washington and grew up as a child on an Indian reservation with my mother, brother and sister. In 1972, at the age of 18 I enlisted in the U. S. Marines. But in 1974, on the way back to my base, a drunk driver hit the car I was riding in head-on going 80. That accident changed my life forever. In 1983 I enrolled in college and by happenchance I took a creative writing class as an elective. At that time I had absolutely no interest in writing.
